Crime, migration, and policing in Latin America: Organized crime is displacing communities throughout Latin America, in part driving the patterns of out-migration in the region. My research aims to understand how crime and policing practices affect patterns of development, human capital accumulation and migration, and what can be done to ameliorate public security. 

Carlos Schmidt-Padilla joined Stanford as a postdoctoral fellow from 2021-2022.
