Mallory Nobles Joins as Associate Director for New Data Science & Social Systems Undergrad Major

I’m thrilled to welcome Mallory Nobles as the associate director of Stanford’s new undergraduate major in data science & social systems. Launching in fall 2022, the B.A. degree is an intellectual pathway that will enable students to develop  triple fluency: expertise in statistical and computational methods, domain knowledge across the core social sciences, and a specialized concentration in an important social problem.

The new major will prepare students for professional careers at the intersection of data and decision-making in the private sector (this is ideal training for important product manager roles), public sector (think: chief data and innovation officers in cities and states), and in nonprofits and philanthropies (where technical skills and social science training are in high demand). The new major is being incubated in Stanford Impact Labs where we are building a community focused on putting social science to work for society.

Throughout her career, Mallory has used math and data science to improve public policy and address societal challenges. She comes to Stanford from MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory  where she partnered with government agencies to develop AI systems that support national security. As a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University, she developed decision-making tools for public health agencies, using advances in machine learning and natural language processing to detect outbreaks of rare diseases. She’s also a committed educator, having founded and led a program to teach middle school girls to code.
