The development of picture comprehension across cultures and contexts: While children growing up in high-income, urban contexts are often surrounded by picture books, televisions, and other kinds of visual symbols, children growing up in global low-income contexts may have less experience with pictures or other kinds of visual symbols. As part of Stanford’s Language and Cognition Lab, and in close collaboration with Kenyan researchers, Rebecca investigates the efficacy of picture-based learning materials and the validity of picture-based assessments in global contexts (e.g., Kisumu, Kenya).
Rebecca Zhu joins Stanford as a postdoctoral fellow from 2025-2026.
