Stanford Profile

Antero Garcia is Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University and President of the National Council of Teachers of English. His research explores the possibilities of speculative imagination and healing in educational research. He has authored or edited more than two dozen books about the possibilities of literacies, play, and civics in transforming schooling in America. Antero is also the co-editor of La Cuenta, an online publication centering the voices and perspectives of individuals labeled undocumented in the U.S.

In his work with the SIL-funded Stanford History Education Group (now Digital Inquiry Group), Antero and team partnered with school districts in Chicago and Los Angeles to develop research-tested Civic Online Reasoning materials for specific subject areas tailored to the needs of students in each district.

As a SIL Design Fellow, Antero worked in partnership with local schools on a project designed to explore how historically marginalized youth participate civically and to excavate the pathways and barriers shaping civic learning within schools.
